UN Day is the day that marks the anniversary of the UN Charter which was created in 1945. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. 24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be recognised as a public holiday.
On October 24 2015, SPK Saint Peter hosted an event that celebrated UN Day. The event was coordinated by many teachers, but most of the performances were taken care of by Arjun M. Bordeos, a teacher of SPK Saint Peter. The competitive part of the event was a talent show that showed the traditional dances of many different countries in the world. The competitors of this part of the event were two people that were chosen by their respective homeroom teachers. In my class, my friends Richard Luci and Shania Aryanto were chosen. For me personally, I was part of the band that played during the event.
There were many performances during the event. The main performance was a play that was about the final days of World War 2 and the birth of the United Nations. During this play there were other performances during the middle of the play. The first one was a song which was sung by Grade 1 and 2. The song they sang was called “A Song of Peace”. The next performance was a dance by many primary students. After that was another song which was sung by Year 9 and Year 10 students. The lead singers of the song were Sharon Grace, Arum Natasha and Tania Katherina. This time the song was “One Love”. Then, there was another dance, but this time the dance was performed by students from the entire International unit. The final performance was a song which was sung by all of the students that participated in the entire event. The song was called “United Nations Song”, very creative. After the performances, the competition began. There were many great performances during the competition, but the best one was the performance of year 9’s Darren and Michelle. Their performance was a dance that represented Japan’s pop-culture.
After the event, there were many traditional dishes from many parts of the world prepared, and with that, the event was over. It was a great day, but all good thing must come to an end.
